Can we talk about how usually whenever Data says something odd or out of place (for him anyway) Geordi doesn’t go to the most obvious option; broken system. He goes to the human option. He asks why Data would say that. And he tries to create a human reason. Honestly that’s one of the reasons I love Geordi so much. Despite being the one who is closest to him (knows the most about him) and fixes him mechanically, he always treats Data like he is a human.

I wonder how it felt for Gates McFadden to deliver that line, since she got fired from that very show when she complained about their sexism.

Thinking about Beverly Crusher and Jadzia Dax and Janice Rand and Seven of Nine and all the other women of Star Trek who had to live this kind of doubleness in how they and their characters were treated.

Yeah, I can be bitter about that sometimes.

We have these great shows that promise so much and tells these stories about a time where there’s (apparently) gender equality. And then the actresses playing these characters, and the characters themselves, aren’t treated with anything resembling equality and fairness.

Even though we have come a long way in 50, 30 and 20 years, there’s still a long way to go before we are at a point where the nice words are met by reality. In television and real life.
